Things Exist By Imitation of Numbers
A new story of mine, "Things Exist By Imitation of Numbers", is up at Daily Science Fiction.
It's the fruit of the Numbers Quartet project I mentioned earlier, with Stephen Gaskell,
Aliette de Bodard, and Nancy Fulda.

Posted by: todd at January 23, 2012 06:58 PMI do so like subtlety that I always run the risk of confusing everyone. Did you read the author's note? It's a sort of whimsical alternate history about if the ancient cult of the Pythagoreans survived into the present and was right about everything...

Posted by: todd at January 24, 2012 09:20 PMNice story. It really is about what is often referred to as the Harmony of the Spheres that united astronomy, pure mathematics and music. A beautiful, if incorrect, point of view that began to die in the 17th Century with Newton and his forbears.
I didn't understand the relevance of the Golden Ratio.
Posted by: dmr at January 25, 2012 06:37 AMIt is indeed about the Harmony of the Spheres, which was a Pythagorean invention, and other Pythagorean ideas, including the golden ratio, Pythagorean ideas about musical tuning, silence, secrecy, numbers having primary philosophical reality, and avoiding beans.
